Road accidents are a growing concem nowadays as They have increased drastically in recent years. Experts at a seminar said that reckless driving, overtaking tendency, uneducated and unskilled drivers and their disregard for traffic rules are the main causes of road accidents.

"Death lurks at every turn across the country. High- speed driving and struggle for overtaking are common pictures on roads these days. A hard core of careless drivers discount law and hazard other people's lives as well as their own. As a result, many lives are lost daily in the streets for reckless driving," one of the speakers said at the seminar. Other speakers also stressed the need for motivation and awareness among the drivers to check reckless driving.

The public are sick of hearing news of needless deaths on roads. Only a couple of days ago, the Suprovat Paribahan bus had hit a woman pedestrian before running over and Professionals (BUP) student, Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury was also hit by bus in front of Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka. "Road accidents in Bangladesh have reached at epidemic levels. It is quite evident in newspaper headlines reporting casualties on a daily basis," said Lipi Biswas, a university student.

Though it sounds absurd, the reality is life apparently seems dirt cheap in streets for road rage. But the irony Is that hardly anybody is held liable for these casualties.

However, the good news is that the government has recently enacted the Road Transport Act 2018 with provisions of harsher punishments for killer drivers, which will hopefully bring discipline in the transport sector and ensure road safety.
