Folk music refers to a kind of music originating from the ordinary people of a region or nation, passed down orally, often with considerable variation. It springs from the heart of a community and is based on their natural style of expression. It is sung by common people who are not formally trained musicians.
That is why it is not sophisticated. Generations of rural poets and composers have created an enormous tradition of Bangla folk music. This music contains strong emotions of human love and separation. Folk music is a combination of folk songs, dance, and tunes that are created based on culture, festivals, natural beauty, and the rural and riverine life of the people. In Bangladesh, folk music has great variety. These include Bhatiyali, Bhawaiya, Baul, spiritual songs, Murshidi, and others. Folk music has been made possible due to the contributions of some notable singers of our country, such as Lalan Shah, Siraj Sai, Hason Raja, Abbasuddin, Abdul Alim, Radha Raman, Durbin Shah, and others. The cultures of different tribes, such as the Santal, Garo, Chakma, and others, have also influenced folk music. Folk music has enriched our culture significantly.
Moreover, many folk songs address social inequality and poverty. There are also folk songs about the material world and supernatural elements.
Though folk music is a vital part of our culture and tradition, we are gradually forgetting and neglecting our rich and traditional folk songs.
